Heart Disease and Glutathione

WHAT IS HEART DISEASE?
Heart disease is one of the leading cause of death in the world. There are several forms of heart disease, but heart disease primarily comes from the buildup of fatty deposits on the inner surface of arteries. Eventually these deposits block blood flow, leading to a heart attack or stroke. Heart disease is also associated with arteriosclerosis which refers to the loss of elasticity or hardening of the arteries.

The Root Cause of Heart Disease

We can say that Free Radicals is a big risk factor of Heart Disease. Arteriosclerosis, has been linked to lipid peroxidation - the oxidation of lipids or fats by free radicals. Scientists now believe that it’s not just the eating of fat that causes the buildup on the inner surface of the arteries, but those fats that have been damaged by free radicals. This is called oxidized fat, which causes the fat to be more sticky therefore adhering to the inner artery walls more easily. This explains why smoking and stress (source of free radical) are risk factors to heart disease.

The enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which requires glutathione, detoxifies the lipid peroxides produced during the oxidation of lipids. Psoriasis and Glutathione

What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system mistakes the skin cells as a pathogen, and sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. The most common form, plaque psoriasis, is commonly seen as red and white hues of scaly patches appearing on the top first layer of the epidermis.

Individuals with psoriasis are at an elevated risk to develop other chronic and serious health conditions also known as "comorbid diseases" or "comorbidities." These include heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes. People with more severe cases of psoriasis have an increased incidence of psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, depression, obesity, and other immune-related conditions such as Crohn's disease.

Increasing Endogenous Antioxidant Glutathione at the cellular level, Psoriasis will be controlled and symptoms will be greatly reduced.

The exact cause of psoriasis is still not known, but certain things act as triggers, and set the stage for a flare-up. Among them are food allergies, nutritional deficiencies, climate changes, damage to the skin from dryness, local injury or sunburn, reaction to certain drugs, infections, build up of toxins in an unhealthy colon and emotional stress.

Maintenance Drugs that can DEPLETE Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Despite the focus on eating a healthier diet as a tool for staying healthy, prescription or nonprescription drugs maybe necessary from time to time. Unfortunately, many of these drugs can cause the body to lose nutrients. The medical name for this is 'drug-induced nutrient depletion'.

The Brain

The Human Brain - the most complex organ in your body and the centerpiece of your nervous system. Gives us the power to speak, imagine and problem solve. It is truly an amazing organ. 

Parts of the Brain - brain is organized into three interconnected layers: the central core, limbic system, and cerebral cortex, all of which contain structures that regulate everyday life.

Brain Parts and Functions:

1. The Central Core (found in all vertebrates). Its five main regions help regulate basic life processes. 

  • The Medulla is the center for breathing, waking, sleeping, and beating of the heart.
  • The Pons triggers dreaming and waking from sleep. 
  • The Reticular Formation signals the cerebral cortex to attend to new stimulation and to remain alert even during sleep.
  • The Thalamus begins the process of interpreting sensory information. It determines fundamental properties, such as whether something is good or bad, and then forwards the information to the appropriate area of the cerebral cortex, where information processing continues.
  • The Cerebellum coordinates body movements, controls posture, and maintains equilibrium. 

2. The Limbic System exists only in mammals. Its regions mediate motivated behaviors, emotional states, and memory processes. 

  • The Hippocampus plays an important role in emotion, learning, and memory.
  • The Amygdala plays a role in aggression, eating, drinking, and sexual behaviors.
  • The Hypothalamus monitors blood levels of glucose, salt, blood pressure, and hormones. It also helps to regulate processes in the body through its connection to the central and autonomic nervous systems and endocrine system.
3. The Cerebral Cortex directs the brain's higher cognitive and emotional functions. It is divided into two almost symmetrical halves called the cerebral hemispheres. Each hemisphere contains four lobes.
  • The Frontal Lobe assists in motor control and cognitive activities, such as planning, making decisions, setting goals, and relating the present to the future through purposeful behavior.
  • The Parietal Lobe assists in sensory processes, spatial interpretation, attention, and language comprehension.
  • The Occipital Lobe processes visual information and passes its conclusions to the parietal and temporal lobes.
  • The Temporal Lobe assists in auditory perception, language comprehension, and visual recognition.
Facts About The Brain
  • Brain cells consume 20% of the oxygen used in the body which generates many free radicals.
  • Detoxification of these free radicals is an essential task for the brain.
  • Glutathione is an important antioxidant found in the brain that detoxifies these free radicals.
  • As the brain's master antioxidant, glutathione plays an essential role in protecting this vital organ from free radical activity. Studies indicate that damage by free radicals to brain tissue may be associated with neurodegenerative disorders such as alzheimer's disease, parkinson's disease and huntington's disease. The neutralization of these free radicals is, therefore, an essential function of glutathione in the brain.
  • Relative to many organs in the human body the brain is deficient in defenses to oxidative stress.
  • This deficiency in the brain can leave it vulnerable to lipid peroxidation. Lipids are a broad group of naturally occurring molecules which include fats, waxes, and such vitamins as A, D, E, and K. Lipids play an important role in such functions as energy storage and cell signaling.
  • The oxidation degeneration of lipids is called lipid peroxidation. This occurs when free radicals steal electrons from lipids in the cell membrane resulting cell damage.
  • Accounts for only about 2% of the body's mass, yet it utilizes approximately 20% of the body's oxygen.
  • Contains less endogenous antioxidant activity when compared with other major organs such as the liver.
These facts only underline the importance of supporting the antioxidant system for the best possible brain function throughout a person's life. The brain can become vulnerable to free radicals when it is subjected to chemicals that are known to decrease glutathione.

Effects on aging in the brain.
Research suggests that oxidative damage from free radicals is a major contributor to the functional decline characteristics of aging in the brain. 

An August 2009 study conducted 2 groups of rats tested the aging effects of aluminum toxicity, administered to the first group. The same toxicity mixed with a substance that acted as a free radical scavenger with antioxidant properties was given to a control group with dramatically different result.

The first group experienced:

  • Increase to lipid peroxidation, leading to free radical damage and oxidative stress.
  • Decrease of SOD, glutathione and other antioxidants.
The second group experienced the opposite:
  • Lipid peroxidation was lowered.
  • Antioxidant activity was enhanced.
The study found that the free radical scavenger had a protective effect against toxin-induced changes related to aging by reducing oxidative stress. This slowed the aging process which was present in the first group.

The importance of a healthy brain is self evident. Subjecting ourselves to an abundance of free radicals and environmental stressors is not only bad for us but can accelerate the aging process in the brain. The brain requires a lot of oxygen and is more susceptible to oxidative stress than many organs because of a lower natural concentration of antioxidant activity.

To increase antioxidant activity in the brain to slow down aging, we need to optimize glutathione production at the cellular level.

What is a Cyst?

What is a Cyst?
A cyst is a closed sac, having a distinct membrane and division (with outer wall called capsule) on the nearby tissue. It may contain air, fluids, or semi-solid material. Cysts may be small and visible only under a microscope, or they may grow to a very large size and displace normal body structures. Once formed, a cyst could go away on its own or may have to be removed through surgery.

What is the Difference Between Cyst and Cancer?
Most cysts in the body are benign (dysfunctional) tumors, the result of plugged ducts or other natural body outlets for secretions. Benign tumors do not grow uncontrollably, do not invade neighbouring tissues, and do not spread throughout the body. However sometimes these masses are considered neoplasm. Neoplasms may be benign, pre-malignant (carcinoma in situ) or malignant (cancer).

Cancer , known medically as a malignant neoplasm, all involving unregulated cell growth. In cancer, cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors, and invade nearby parts of the body. Important fact to remember: "Not all tumors are cancerous." 

What is a Tumor?
To make it easy to understand, tumour/tumor is a latin word that means "swelling". In its medical sense it has traditionally meant an abnormal swelling of the flesh.

Cysts occur commonly in numerous tissues and organs and are often named according to their particular anatomic location (for example ovarian cysts, bladder cysts, breast cysts, liver cysts, kidney cysts, pancreatic cysts, vaginal cysts, skin cysts, thyroid cysts).

Certain types of cysts also have special designations and nomenclature. Examples of these include:
  • Ganglion cyst: a cyst around a tendon, most commonly occurring at the wrist
  • Baker's cyst: a cyst containing joint fluid that is located in popliteal space behind the knee
  • Bartholin's cyst: cystic enlargement of small glands near the vaginal opening
  • Nabothian cyst: a mucus-filled cyst on the surface of the uterine cervix
  • Pilonidal cysts: cysts that arise in the soft tissue at the base of the tailbone (coccyx) of the lower back, just above the natal cleft (the cleavage between the buttocks)
  • Dermoid cyst: a type of benign tumor of the ovary that contains multiple cystic spaces and various tissue types
Cyst Causes
Cysts can arise through a variety of processes in the body, including "wear and tear" or simple obstructions to the flow of fluid, infections, tumors, chronic inflammatory conditions, genetic (inherited) conditions, defects in developing organs in the embryo.

Most cysts arise due to the types of conditions listed above and are only preventable to the extent that the underlying cause is preventable.

Facts About Cyst
  • Small cysts or cysts in internal structures of the body may not produce symptoms. 
  • Cysts in the skin or in tissues just beneath the skin may be recognized as painless lumps or bumps. 
  • Cysts which can be felt may be hard or soft. 
  • Sometimes it is possible to notice an increase in size of a cyst while in other cases, the size will remain constant. 
  • It is often not possible to distinguish a cyst from some other cause of tissue swelling simply by physical examination.
  • If cysts arise due to a serious infection, tumor, or chronic disease, the symptoms depend on the location, type, and extent of the disease.
Cyst Detection
Cysts of internal organs such as the kidneys or liver may not be detected by the affected individual. These cysts often are first discovered by imaging studies (X-ray, ultrasound, computerized tomography or CT scan, and magnetic resonance imaging or MRI) sometimes performed for other reasons.

Surgery
Cysts that are very large and result in symptoms due to their size may be surgically removed. Sometimes the fluid contained within a cyst can be drained, or aspirated, by inserting a needle or catheter into the cyst cavity, resulting in collapse of the cyst. Imaging such as ultrasound or CT scanning may be used for guidance in draining (aspirating) cyst contents.

If there is any suspicion that a cyst is cancerous, the cyst may be removed by surgery, or a biopsy is taken of the cyst wall (capsule) to rule out malignancy. Depending upon the size and location of the cyst, this may be performed in a doctor's office, outpatient surgery center, or hospital operating room.

In certain cases, aspirated fluid from a cyst is examined under a microscope to determine if cancer cells are present in the cyst.

Cyst and Glutathione
Cyst is nothing as compared to Cancer, we know already that it is more likely a benign tumor (swelling/growth). Cyst can be avoided if we will help our body produce enough endogenous antioxidant Glutathione to remove toxins and reduce swelling or inflammation. Endogenous Vs Exogenous Antioxidant

Antioxidant and Free Radicals
Free radicals - are highly reactive, unstable molecules that have lost one electron and are aggressively looking for a replacement. Free radicals are formed in the body, and its production is increased when we are exposed to such things as tobacco smoke, alcohol, insecticides, radiation and even to sunlight. Other causes are a high-fat diet, eating fried foods, or strenuous exercise. It is the free radical production from these sources that we need to be most concerned about. In a simple explanation, FREE RADICALS are responsible to cell damage.

Exogenous Antioxidant - antioxidant that we obtain from our diet and supplements. Vitamin C and Vitamin E are the most popular exogenous antioxidant that floods the market.

Endogenous Antioxidant - antioxidant produced by our body. More powerful free radical fighter than those you can get from your diet. The five important endogenous antioxidants are Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione, Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), Catalase and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).

Our body produces more SOD, Catalase and Glutathione when certain free radicals are present. It is our body's Frontline defense (First Line of Defense).

Some Important Roles of Endogenous Antioxidant:
  • SOD can convert the most reactive or most dangerous free radicals into hydrogen peroxide, which catalase and Glutathione can then turn into oxygen and water, neutralizing them.
  • ALA, Glutathione and CoQ10 has properties that can regenerate and recycle some exogenous antioxidants. **Example - Vitamin C (Ascorbate) donates an electron to a free radical to neutralize it, making it dehydroascorbate which has a half-life in the body of only a few minutes. If the dehydroascorbate is not rereduced (given back its lost electrons) back to ascorbate, it is irreversibly lost making it a weak free radical. Endogenous antioxidants can regenerate this dyhydroascorbate, turning it back to ascorbate form so it can combat another free radical again.

Glutathione is present in each and every cell of our body, found in high concentrations in liver cells. It is the cell’s primary antioxidant against free radicals produced by toxic chemicals and viruses. Glutathione also plays an essential role in the liver’s detoxification process (Phase II system).

  • Glutathione - has 1 million electrons to share, it can neutralize 1million free radicals at a time as well as give back the lost electrons of exogenous antioxidants like vitamin c and vitamin e making them functional again.
It is estimated that every one of the cells in our body receives 10,000 hits a day from free radicals, assuming we have 50 to 75 trillion cells, imagine the total hits from free radicals we encounter per day! If we will rely from exogenous antioxidants to neutralize that many free radicals, we would have to consume approximate amount of 375 oranges or 87 glasses of red wine or 120 vitamin C capsule! Glutathione being our body's frontline defense, do most of the work in neutralizing these free radicals.

  • Endogenous and Exogenous Antioxidants, revive and spare one another from destruction. So those exogenous antioxidants coming from our diet and supplements are also important.

  • It is evident that we need to rely on replenishing glutathione at the cellular level to be healthier and live longer.
  • When we are Younger, our body is capable of producing enough endogenous antioxidants to combat free radicals on their own. Capability decreases as we age, making us vulnerable to sickness.
For decades, the main problem encountered with glutathione sold as a supplement is that only very small amounts can be absorbed into the blood stream because of its large molecule size aside from our body breaks them down in the process of digestion.

Arthritis and Glutathione


Arthritis

Arthritis commonly referred to as “joint inflammation” if left untreated will result to joint damage. Early detection and treatments are very important.

Common types of arthritis

  • Osteoarthritis - usually occurs when joints are overused and misused, characterized by the loss of joint smoothness. Some calls it the "wear and tear" arthritis. The cushioning cartilage that protects the joint has been damaged, resulting bones rubbing together. This commonly happens in the knees, but can also be in the hips, spine and hands.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis - a type of arthritis wherein the body's immune system attacks joint tissue. Often starts in a person's hands, wrists and feet. Then it advances to shoulders, elbows and hips. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, fatigue, weakness, slight fever and inflamed tissue lumps under the skin.
Arthritis can affect every age group, but those over 45 years of age suffers most. It is classified as a chronic disease. Many organizations, such as Arthritis foundation, do not focus enough attention and research on natural ways to treat arthritis. Herbal and Nutritional treatment remedies is not a priority for them. They focus on how to manage pain, which is the most common "symptom" of arthritis thru the aid of "pain killers" which unfortunately only conceals the symptom. It will lessen the pain, but arthritis itself is still there. Removing symptom (pain) is an immediate temporary fix and will only make patients a regular buying customer of companies manufacturing pain killers.

Glutathione and Arthritis

It appears that when you have osteoarthritis or rheumatiod arthritis, you have malfunctioning joint because the cartilage holding your joints breaks down. It is either overused/misused or it has been damaged by your immune system. In any of these events, it is clear that we need to repair the joint cartilage or probably stimulate production of new healthy cartilage to address arthritis properly. What is DNA?

DNA, or Deoxyribonucleic Acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. Sometimes referred to as the "Building Blocks of Life."

DNA contains the instructions needed for an organism to develop, survive and reproduce. That's how important DNA is. It contains the genetic information, and this information dictates how the body’s cells would construct new proteins according to the genetic code

Most DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA). Nearly every cell in a person’s body has the same DNA.

An important property of DNA is that it can replicate, or make copies of itself. Each strand of DNA in the double helix can serve as a pattern for duplicating the sequence of bases. This is critical when cells divide because each new cell needs to have an exact copy of the DNA present in the old cell.

Damaged DNA

When the DNA gets damaged (caused by free radicals and mutagens), it will cause cell mutation. Since DNA controls cell growth, development and replication it is essential to have a healthy DNA to avoid replication of damaged or mutated cells. We could say that Healthy DNA is critical in having a Healthy Cell, thus it is essential to repair DNA to have a healthy body.

What is Responsible for DNA Repair?

I firmly believe that Endogenous Antioxidants are responsible for DNA repair, maybe not all of them but the most prevalent Endogenous Antioxidant Glutathione is. Glutathione as discussed on our previous posts is responsible for protecting Cells and Cellular Components. It aids in detoxification, immune boosting, free radical scavenging and plays a very important role in the synthesis and Repair of DNA since it is present in each and every cell of our body.

Diabetes and Glutathione


What is Diabetes?
A disorder of glucose or blood sugar metabolism. The body is not capable of breaking down glucose in the blood stream.

Major Types of Diabetes
  • Type 1 diabetes - the body is unable to produce insulin that is needed to break down blood glucose so the body may use it.
  • Type 2 diabetes - the common type of diabetes where the body has the ability to produce the needed insulin, but it can not be recognized by the cells. The major cause of type 2 diabetes is obesity.
Diabetes Symptoms
Studies indicate that early detection of diabetes symptoms and treatment may lower the chance of having diabetes complication. Diabetes often goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms are harmless.

Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms
  • Frequent urination
  • Unusual thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue and Irritability
Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms
  • Any of the type 1 symptoms
  • Frequent infections
  • Blurred vision
  • Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
  • Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
  • Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections
  • Note: some people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms
How can we control or treat Diabetes?
Regular exercise and Healthy diet is essential, foods high in fiber, nuts, onions and garlic are a good food choice to control blood glucose at a safe level. Apart from diet and exercise, antioxidant supplement is also needed. Glutathione injections could kill, FDA warns
ABS-CBN – Tue, May 31, 2011

MANILA - Illegal injections of a cancer-treating chemical pose a risk of death to legions of Filipinos who use them to try to whiten their skin, health authorities warned Tuesday. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspects the drug glutathione is being injected in high doses as a skin-whitener, but said it can cause serious conditions including kidney failure and blood poisoning.

It has issued advice against taking regular injections of the chemical -- approved only for treating cancer -- because the government suspects licensed skin doctors are among its purveyors, said spokeswoman Jesusa Joyce Cirunay.

"We have been getting reports that they are being administered by people who have experience in injecting medicines," Cirunay told AFP. She said the agency had monitored many cases of glutathione use resulting in ailments, but gave no figures. The agency said that claims had been made that glutathione whitened the skin by deactivating the enzyme tyrosinase, which helps produce melanin, the pigment that gives human skin its colour.
But these claims have been widely disputed, the agency said.

It warned that repeated injections of the drug could lead to kidney failure, blood poisoning and toxic epidermal necrolysis, in which a large portion of the skin peels off, exposing the human body to many infections.

"The alarming increase in the unapproved use of glutathione administered intravenously as a skin-whitening agent at very high doses is unsafe and may result in serious consequences to the health of users," its advisory said.

The government is gathering evidence that could lead to prosecutions, Cirunay said without giving details. Skin-whitening treatments and products including soaps, lotions and deodorants are popular in the Philippines and other Asian countries.

Bladder Cancer
CANCER is a SYMPTOM of DNA mutation, abnormal growth of damaged cells. Each of the 100 Trillion cells that continually replicate has a set of genetic instructions in its center called DNA that controls cell growth, development and replication. When the DNA gets damaged, it can replicate an altered (damaged) cell – and when this altered cell replicates itself.... This can become CANCER.

Read my article Glutathione and Cancer to know more on how to prevent Cancer. Glutathione GSH plays a big factor in stopping cell mutation by protecting and repairing the DNA.

Telltale Signs of Cancer include:  A lump or thickening in the breast or testicles; a change in a wart or mole; a skin sore or a persistent sore throat that doesn't heal; a change in bowel or bladder habits; a persistent cough or coughing blood; constant indigestion or trouble swallowing; unusual bleeding or vaginal discharge; and chronic fatigue. 

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should see a physician for testing. The following are signs that may occur in specific types of cancers:

Bladder cancer: Blood in the urine, pain or burning upon urination; frequent urination; or cloudy urine

Bone cancer: Pain in the bone or swelling around the affected site; fractures in bones; weakness, fatigue; weight loss; repeated infections; nausea, vomiting, constipation, problems with urination; weakness or numbness in the legs; bumps and bruises that persist 

Brain cancer: Dizziness; drowsiness; abnormal eye movements or changes in vision; weakness, loss of feeling in arms or legs or difficulties in walking; fits or convulsions; changes in personality, memory or speech; headaches that tend to be worse in the morning and ease during the day, that may be accompanied by nausea or vomiting

Breast cancer: A lump or thickening of the breast; discharge from the nipple; change in the skin of the breast; a feeling of heat; or enlarged lymph nodes under the arm

Colorectal cancer: Rectal bleeding (red blood in stools or black stools); abdominal cramps; constipation alternating with diarrhea; weight loss; loss of appetite; weakness; pallid complexion

Kidney cancer: Blood in urine; dull ache or pain in the back or side; lump in kidney area, sometimes accompanied by high blood pressure or abnormality in red blood cell count  

Leukemia: Weakness, paleness; fever and flu-like symptoms; bruising and prolonged bleeding; enlarged lymph nodes, spleen, liver; pain in bones and joints; frequent infections; weight loss; night sweats

Lung cancer: Wheezing, persistent cough for months; blood-streaked sputum; persistent ache in chest; congestion in lungs; enlarged lymph nodes in the neck

Melanoma: Change in mole or other bump on the skin, including bleeding or change in size, shape, color, or texture

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: Painless swelling in the lymph nodes in the neck, underarm, or groin; persistent fever; feeling of fatigue; unexplained weight loss; itchy skin and rashes; small lumps in skin; bone pain; swelling in the abdomen; liver or spleen enlargement

Oral cancer:  A lump in the mouth, ulceration of the lip, tongue or inside of the mouth that does not heal within a couple of weeks; dentures that no longer fit well; oral pain, bleeding, foul breath, loose teeth, and changes in speech

Ovarian cancer: Abdominal swelling; in rare cases, abnormal vaginal bleeding; digestive discomfort

Pancreatic cancer: Upper abdominal pain and unexplained weight loss; pain near the center of the back; intolerance of fatty foods; yellowing of the skin; abdominal masses; enlargement of liver and spleen

Prostate cancer: Urination difficulties due to blockage of the urethra; bladder retains urine, creating frequent feelings of urgency to urinate, especially at night; bladder not emptying completely; burning or painful urination; bloody urine; tenderness over the bladder; and dull ache in the pelvis or back

Stomach cancer: Indigestion or heartburn; discomfort or pain in the abdomen; nausea and vomiting; diarrhea or constipation; bloating after meals; loss of appetite; weakness and fatigue; bleeding - vomiting blood or blood in the stool

Uterine cancer: Abnormal vaginal bleeding, a watery bloody discharge in postmenopausal women; a painful urination; pain during intercourse; pain in pelvic area.
